About the programme | The program is intended for participants who want to acquire the teacher education necessary for working in a school (according to Article 105 of the Act on Education in Primary and Secondary Schools). The aim of the program is for participants to acquire basic teaching competences. After completing the program, participants will have the following competences
I. KNOWLEDGE
- Teaching and learning – apply and adapt different mechanisms and strategies of learning, teaching, and behaviour management
- Create learning conditions adapted to students needs so that they can develop their maximum potential.
- Evaluation and monitoring – monitor and evaluate learning outcomes as determined by the curriculum (programme) of the course and know the legal acts that regulate the assessment and monitoring of student progress
- Use different methods of evaluation and monitoring.
- Use statistical information to evaluate the effectiveness of one’s own teaching for the monitoring of student progress and to raise achievement levels.
- Use of computers in teaching (ICT) – basic understanding and use of quantitative numerical and graphic displays, using computers to gather information, create and present content, and communicate with students.
- Knowledge of student development and diversity – recognise specific developmental characteristics of students, and know, understand, and apply knowledge about developmental, social, religious, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic influences on student progress – know the role and tasks of professional associates in schools.
- Health and well-being of students – know the legal regulations and provide support to students whose well-being is undermined by different personal circumstances and recognise when it is necessary to seek professional help.

The program is structured in three modules:
- General Education Module, Professional Education Module and Methodological Module with Teaching Practice.
- The General Education Module consists of compulsory subjects that teach basic teaching competences: Developmental psychology, Educational Psychology, General Pedagogy, Didactics, Methodology in Research in Education, Educating Students with Special Needs.
- Specific teaching competencies are acquired through the Professional Education Module and comes from the compulsory subjects (Basics of Language Culture and Use of Computers in Teaching) and optional subjects. The Methodological Module with Teaching Practice consists of compulsory courses that teach professional skills through direct practical experience (Course Methodology and School Teaching Practice).

About the programme | The programme consists of two modules: 1. School of Croatian language, Culture and Civilisation 2. Intensive Croatian language course Modules are implemented at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The programme is intended for participants who want to acquire and develop their language communication skills and intercultural skills in Croatian as a foreign language. |

About the programme | The lifelong programme Learning and Teaching in Higher Education is intended for people who have completed graduate study programmes, primarily for those employed at higher education institutions. The programme is intended for higher education teachers. The lifelong programme Learning and Teaching in Higher Education enables participants to acquire the basic knowledge and skills to work as a university teacher. The knowledge and skills that are acquired will enable participants to become more effective teachers because of theoretical reflections and research about their own teaching. |

- The notion of critical thinking as a way of overcoming spontaneous progress and the development of basic skills; literature research on critical thinking and its application in improving students’ thinking.

The program consists of the following units:
- How the choice of journal affects the writing of a research article and how to work through peer-review.
- In this unit, all the factors that affect the choice of the journal in which the work will be published are considered, where it is explained how the choice of journal affects the structure of the article and the expected language and style. It also discusses the elements that must be met for reviewers to not reject the article.
- How to express oneself precisely and concisely.
- This unit is aimed at avoiding unnecessary repetitions (ellipsis and pro-forms etc.) and how statements and reflections can be expressed more concisely.
- How to highlight one’s own results.
- This unit explains acceptable ways of highlighting one’s own results and findings in English.
- Taking a position, critique, paraphrasing and plagiarism.
- In this unit, participants gain knowledge about how to protect themselves from making strong claims, how to critique other people’s and their own work in an acceptable way, how to paraphrase and what is considered as plagiarism.

About the programme | The Department of Croatian Studies at Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers the lifelong learning programme Applied Croatian Language Course for Proof-Readers and Translators for the purpose of professional development. The programme consists of two modules. The proofreading module is intended for Croatian speakers. A special training module in the area of the Croatian language is intended for other participants, mainly for those working in the social sciences and humanities. Participants of both modules acquire new (practical) knowledge about standard Croatian language and develop specific skills when using this language. This will make them more competitive on the labour market with regards to those jobs that require advanced levels of standard Croatian. After completing the programme, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion of the Lifelong Education Programme and a Supplement to the Certificate of Completion of the Lifelong Education Programme (which contains a detailed description of the Course content and acquired competencies). |
The Reader Module trains participants for two sets of competences
1. Recognising specific language problems and deviations from the norms in standard Croatian:
- Knowledge of the use of manuals in the field of the modern Croatian language (grammar guides, dictionaries, spelling guides) and knowledge about the competences of certain types of manuals
- Comparing different data in manuals about specific language problems and making a competent judgment about the way a problem can be solved.
- Competent use of information from various types of manuals to resolve specific normative problems (at all language levels).
- Knowledge of the basic principles of regular language.
- Knowledge of linguistic features of certain functional styles and making a competent judgment about the acceptable and unacceptable features of different types of text.
- Knowledge of the most common current normative deviations in public language use and offering possible solutions.
2. Performing proofreading work:
- Distinguishing between permissible and impermissible proofreading and editing procedures in written media.
- Carrying out proofreading and editorial work on different types of text (professional, scientific, popular science, administrative-business, journalistic, etc.).
- Noting deviations from legal norms and suggesting corrections.
- Using prescribed proofreading signs.
The Translation Module trains participants for two sets of competences
1. Recognition of specific language problems and deviations from the norms in standard Croatian:
- Knowledge of the use of manuals in the field of the modern Croatian language (grammar guides, dictionaries, spelling guides) and knowledge about the competences of certain types of manuals.
- Applying the data from various types of manuals to specific normative problems (at all language levels).
- Knowing the basic principles of regular language.
- Knowing the linguistic features of certain functional styles and being able to make a judgement about acceptable and unacceptable features of different types of text.
- Knowing the most common current normative deviations in public language use and offering possible solutions.
- Distinguishing between the types of linguistic interference in the Croatian (standard) language.
2. Applying the norms of standard Croatian when translating into the Croatian language:
- Noting and eliminating language interferences at the syntactic and lexical levels.
- Respecting linguistic and stylistic norms of standard Croatian standard when translating into Croatian.
- Making decisions about the possibilities of applying spelling rules on examples that are not included in manuals.
- Using prescribed proofreading signs.

About the programme | The dynamism and complexity of contemporary society requires a systematic and coherent approach when identifying, analysing, and evaluating the general social context in which different social groups exist. This needs to be done in order to develop responsive, adequate, and high-quality public policies that are aimed at efficiently solving these groups’ problems. Young people, as a separate social group, are no exception, where many normative and other acts at the national, international and global levels recognise their uniqueness, as well as the importance of educating experts who will work for, and with, young people. The programme in Young People in Contemporary Society is intended for all professionals who work with young people. The goal of the programme is to offer scientific insights, as well as practical skills related to the creation of a stimulating environment in which young people can develop themselves. The programme Young People in Contemporary Society consists of three modules that cover the most important topics in the field of youth studies: 1. Research on young people. 2. Working with young people 3. Young people and community development. With its focus on the synergy of scientific and policy insights, the programme offers a comprehensive picture of the phenomenon of young people and young people in contemporary society. The target groups are youth workers, teachers, teachers and professional associates in education, social workers, educators in student accommodation and librarians. |

About the programme | The lifelong education programme Contemporary Poland: Language and Culture is a Polish language course that also includes teaching about general and contemporary Polish culture in the broadest sense of the word. In accordance with current directions in the teaching of foreign languages, participants acquire cultural competences through learning the Polish language according to the level of the group. Depending on the number of interested people, it is possible to learn the language at levels from A1 to C1. Classes are taught by a native Polish speaker. Groups and programme dates are determined after registration and are arranged according to the possibilities of participants. After passing the exams, participants receive a certificate from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka. The programme is held online, so it is possible to participate from anywhere. Participants must have access to the Internet, a microphone, and a camera. Classes are held once a week for 90 minutes. |

About the programme | The Professional training programme in Italian Language, Communication and Culture 1 is the first part of a two-part programme that enables the acquisition and development of a wide range of professional skills needed to carry out various activities in different social contexts. This includes business, since as an important global language, knowledge of Italian is necessary. The programme is based on contemporary academic research, and enables, as well as increases the mobility of participants in the educational process, their competitiveness, and possibilities for employment on the labour market. A unique quality of Primorje-Goranska County and the wider region is the autochthonous Italian minority, and the use of Italian as a second language. Cultural and economic connections with Italy are also important. As such, the programme meets the specific needs of improving participants’ knowledge about Italian language and culture, in order to acquire professional competences for carrying out work in various structures where knowledge of the Italian language is of key importance (e.g. Italian language teaching in Croatian as well as Italian-language schools, in the hospitality industry, in tourism and in general in business, in international transport and freight-forwarding, in cultural and business collaborations, as well as those economies that recognise Italy as a partner country). The programme is especially important for those who want to apply to graduate study programmes in the humanities since participants acquire a maximum of 15 ECTS points in the Communis segment, and in other study programmes offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka. Surveys conducted in Rijeka show great interest in learning the Italian language, literature, and culture. |

About the programme | The program is intended for graduates who, for business reasons, need to improve their knowledge of Italian language and culture. The programme Professional Training in Italian language, Communication and Culture 2 is a continuation of the programme Professional Training in Italian language, Communication and Culture 1. It enables the acquisition and development of a wide range of professional skills needed to perform various activities in different social areas, especially in business, where knowledge of Italian is necessary (e.g. Italian language teaching in Croatian as well as Italian-language schools, in the hospitality industry, in tourism and in general in business, in international transport and freight-forwarding, in cultural and business collaborations, as well as those economies that recognise Italy as a partner country). The program covers three areas: Italian language, Communication, and Italian culture. The program consists of two compulsory subjects, Italian language and Communication and Reading texts in contemporary Italian, and three optional subjects, where participants choose one: Forms of Italian popular culture, Discussion and Communication, and Glottodidactics. The main aim of the programme is to cover all aspects of the Italian language in written and spoken expression, to introduce participants to the contemporary Italian language through the reading and translation of notable Italian magazines, and to encourage the analysis of all communication styles from reviews to letters, literary forms, and journalistic forms. The programme lasts for three months, and participants must fulfil the obligations provided in the programme and in accordance with the ECTS credits. The programme involves face to face teaching, as well as independent research on literature and practical tasks, with individual consultations with subject teachers. |

About the programme | The programme is intended for teachers of Italian language in Italian schools, but also teachers of the Italian language as an optional subject in Croatian schools, teachers of humanities and science subjects in the Italian language, educators in groups where the Italian language is taught in preschool institutions, and all other teachers who use the Italian language in their teaching. The Contemporary Topics in Italian Studies programme arises from a need for teachers in the educational system with excellent communication skills in the Italian language and knowledge about Italian culture. The programme includes three modules: The Italian Language Today: Usage, Function, and Form Italian Society, History, and Culture in the 20th century Reading Path: Values and Creativity in Contemporary Texts. The aim of the module The Italian Language Today: Usage, Function, and Form is to cover all aspects of the Italian language in written and spoken expression. Participants will improve their knowledge of grammar and be able to apply them in different contexts – professional, literary, speaking, etc. The aim of the module Italian Society, History, and Culture in the 20th century is to define and analyse Italian culture and society in the 20th century, to describe and explain instruments of communication in contemporary Italian culture through literature, geography, history, cinematography, theatre, art, music, and intellectual and social movements. The aim of the module Reading Path: Values and Creativity in Contemporary Texts is to acquire linguistic competences in critical, written and spoken expression, to learn about different methods of textual analysis and to draw out connections between Italian culture in general and the specific way in which it is reflected in contemporary media. In addition, the module aims to systematically present selected works from literary-historical and literary-theoretical perspectives. The programme lasts for three months, and participants must fulfil the obligations provided in the programme in accordance with the ECTS credits. The programme involves face to face teaching, as well as independent research on literature and practical tasks, with individual consultations with subject teachers. The programme involves 30 hours of classes. |

About the programme | The Differential Education Programme for Enrolling on the Graduate Study Programme in Pedagogy prepares participants for continuing their studies on the graduate (part-time) single honours programme in pedagogy. The programme is carried out at the undergraduate level for a duration of 2 semesters, where students acquire 60 ECTS points. The purpose of the programme is based on the recognised needs of the labour market in the public and private sectors. It has been noted that there is a requirement for the lifelong education of all profiles of experts who are employed in educational and other related institutions and organisations. This programme seeks to replace insufficient or mismatched qualifications of experts in developmental pedagogy, both in education and other educational profiles. The programme is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary. In addition to pedagogy, the disciplines of psychology, organisational sciences and special educational needs are also included. Interdisciplinarity and multidisciplinarity are also reflected in the openness of the programme: applicants who had have completed their studies in other areas can enrol on it. This programme represents the first lifelong education programme of this type in Croatia. |

Enrolment conditions
Students must have completed:
- Professional studies lasting two or three years, from the following related fields in the social sciences: educational sciences, information and communication sciences, sociology, psychology and educational-rehabilitation sciences and kinesiology.
- Pedagogical academies for a duration of two or three years, who have a passed the professional exam for working in a school or completed the Supplementary Teacher Education Programme.
- Professional studies for teachers in classroom and preschool education lasting two or three years.
- University undergraduate or graduate studies and/or professional studies lasting two or three years in other scientific fields, who have the passed the professional exam for working in a school or completed the Supplementary Teacher Education Programme. Additional conditions about the selection of students for the Differential Education Programme for Enrolling on the Graduate Study Programme in Pedagogy will be determined by the Admission Competition and will be in accordance with the conditions stated above, the conditions of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, and the University of Rijeka.
