Possibilities of continuing education | Students can continue their education on an appropriate doctoral programme. For students who want to continue their education at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, the Department of Philosophy offers the Doctoral Study Programme “Philosophy and Contemporaneity”. Lifelong learning is also possible. This is based on the transferable skills that will be acquired that are related to critical thinking, organising, and systematising a large amount of information, as well as being able to express oneself clearly and making critical judgments. |
Employment possibilities | After completing the M.Ed. in Philosophy (Joint Honours), students are primarily qualified to work in schools where philosophical subjects are taught (philosophy, logic, ethics, civic education, critical thinking, etc.). In addition, students acquire a degree of literacy and education that enables them to work in the media, publishing and other activities where analytical and critical reasoning, creative and conceptual thinking, good communication, and also interpretative and evaluative skills are used to deal with different types of problems in educational and related sectors. |

PHILOSOPHICAL DISCIPLINES – CONCEPTS AND THEORETICAL DIRECTIONS | 1. Present and carry out an in-depth analysis of more complex philosophical concepts, problems and their solutions in specific disciplines and sub-disciplines of philosophy. 2. Comprehend, critically analyse, and contextualise philosophical theory in specific disciplines and sub-disciplines, and independently evaluate which of them most successfully answers the problems posed. 3. Critically interpret and evaluate traditions, directions, representatives, and approaches in philosophy. 4. Critically contextualise, compare, and evaluate philosophical concepts and debates in specific historical periods, directions, and approaches. 5. Problematise the meaning and significance of philosophy in relation to other academic sciences and disciplines, contemporary culture, and society. |
ADVANCED CRITICAL- ANALYTICAL SKILLS AND METHODOLOGY | 1. Critically apply tools of informal logic to identify, analyse and present arguments when solving philosophical problems. 2. Analyse and evaluate the logical structure of more complex texts and identify logical relationships and recognise typical errors in argumentation. 3. Critically apply and demonstrate complex methods and strategies of critical thinking. 4. Acquire advanced skills in the independent reading and interpretation of classical philosophical texts. 5. Compare discussions that collectively characterise different fields in contemporary philosophy, as well as general discussions in philosophy and closely related sciences and disciplines. 6. Comprehend, analyse, and compare methodological approaches in different philosophical domains. 7. Independently create professional and academic texts using relevant literature, and apply academic conventions for citing, paraphrasing, referencing, and writing a bibliography. 8. Apply advanced philosophical theory to real life social problems and situations. 9. Acquire and improve independent and lifelong study skills for individual professional work, and social and civic engagement. |
TEACHING COMPETENCES | 1. Describe, debate, and explain the most important elements of the teaching process and lesson organisation. 2. Organise, apply, and evaluate components of earlier written teaching plans for secondary school teaching in the subject areas of philosophy, logic, and ethics. 3. Describe, explain, and apply the methods and processes of teaching an introduction to philosophy, logic, and ethics, as well as the basics (and other relevant parts) of teaching subjects in the humanities and social sciences. 4. Determine teaching goals and learning outcomes, and the appropriate teaching methods for teaching subjects and teaching units. 5. Describe, explain, and use relevant theory for assessing student and teacher work. 6. Independently teach a lesson in the relevant subjects. |
