About the programme

In today’s world, the translation of texts, as well as interpretation work, has become a form of international mass communication. Along with the increased scope of this type of communication, the range of language requirements that translators must be able to successfully master has also increased. As a result, the need for the work of highly educated translators is equally present in both the public and private sectors. To meet these needs, classical forms of language training for translators are no longer sufficient, and there is a requirement for specialist training at the postgraduate level. This training is also a prerequisite for successful business, and thus for the development of all segments of society that use translation services. The Postgraduate Specialist Programme in Translation Studies is fully aligned with the guidelines of the European Master’s in Translation (EMT), which aims to facilitate the mobility of students, the easier inclusion of the programme in financing schemes and the alignment of our students with colleagues in the European labour market. The knowledge levels of the foreign languages that are offered as a part of this program are fully aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (ZEROJ).

Competences acquired and employment possibilities

During the programme, students are trained to work in the fields of written and oral translation, master the required knowledge in their native and foreign languages, as well as acquire knowledge about the theoretical and terminological foundations of a number of relevant professions (legal, economic, culture, etc.).

The programme offers the following competences:

  • To be able to use appropriate techniques in oral and written translation, according to internationally recognised standards.
  • To develop linguistic and cultural competences in their native tongue and the selected foreign language(s).
  • To be able to understand the translation and communication process in general.
  • To be able to understand the importance of cultural and intercultural aspects for translation practice.
  • To develop communication competences and the ability to adapt to different contexts and translation tasks.
  • To acquire useful knowledge in the fields of law and economy.
  • To acquire essential knowledge about the EU, its institutions, legal and economic system.
  • To acquire knowledge about the circumstances and norms of translation practice in Croatia and in the EU.

By acquiring the above competences, candidates will be able to successfully deal with all types of translation work, from written translations to simultaneous and consecutive interpreting (the interpreting part of the programme will be further developed according to needs and possibilities). As a result of the elective courses that are on offer, the individual needs and interests of students are accounted for, where ultimately different profiles of translators will enter the labour market (literary, legal, economic, tourism and other areas).
