INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS OF CULTURAL STUDIES | 1. Describe the origin of cultural studies and their (inter)disciplinary specificity; note similarities and differences with other disciplines in the social sciences and humanities such as sociology, sociolinguistics, ethnology, cultural anthropology, communication, media studies, cultural history, etc. 2. Differentiate and compare theoretical trends: evolutionism, functionalism, structural functionalism, cultural relativism, analyse the relationship between cultural history and classical histories of culture, and compare different theories of socialization, collective behaviour, stratification, social institutions. 3. Using an historical perspective, define, analyse, and evaluate social phenomena in the domains of media and communication from the broader interdisciplinary perspective of the social sciences and humanities, and critically reflect on the role and significance of products in the culture and media industries and key events in popular culture. 4. Explain the basic theoretical preoccupations of foundational authors fundamental for Cultural Studies: Marx, Lacan, Althusser, Foucault, Adorno, Derrida, and explain the primary concepts used in Cultural Studies: representation, appropriation, identity, the ‘Other’, modern, postmodern, anti-essentialism, reflexivity. 5. Distinguish between psychophysical, psychosocial, socio-cultural, and social identities, and compare traditional concepts of gender/sexual, cultural and ethno-national identities in contemporary concepts. 6. Outline how the concept of culture is used in different disciplines (anthropology, literary theory, and sociology). 7. Evaluate culture based on ethnographic research and analyse hierarchical approaches to culture at the intracultural and global levels, cultural constructions of the “Other” and “closer” (self-critical discourse), and cultural aspects of globalization. |
RESEARCH METHODS | 1. Differentiate between research strategies, methods, and techniques used in Cultural Studies, especially field research, case analysis and observation and interview methods. 2. Define the selection criteria for the appropriate methodology according to the research problem 3. Independently carry out small-scale research and analyse a cultural phenomenon or event. 4. Use basic word processing tools, images and sounds and develop a theoretical understanding, as well as the practical skills for preparing, publishing, and retrieving digital content. 5. Analyse literary texts, images and sounds as a cultural sign and as a text/image/sound with its own laws. |
