Nominations and applications for Erasmus+ mobility
To apply for mobility at the Faculty of Humanities and Social sciences in Rijeka (FHSS), students need to be nominated by their home university. Students will then receive an invitation to apply online and asked to upload the required documentation. Once the application documentation has been received and reviewed, FHSS will give the mobility approval and send some further information.
All documentation should be submitted in acceptable electronic formats such as *.pdf, *.doc etc. and should be clearly legible. Handwritten documents or documents in image formats will not be accepted!
Student mobility for studying at FHSS Rijeka
Students can choose their courses from the Course catalogue, which offers a list of the available courses from each department/division at the FHSS. Courses are offered in English or in other foreign languages. Students who have language competencies in Croatian or other languages (a minimum CEFR level of B2) can request to participate in courses of the regular study programmes in Croatian.
Each department has its own conditions regarding the choice of courses. Courses marked with a C (CLOSED) are mainly intended for students of a specific field of study and with previous knowledge (e.g., psychology students; art history students; German language students etc.). If the course is marked as O (OPEN) it has no prerequisites and is open to all students, irrespective of their field of study.
Erasmus+ students can choose courses from one or more different departments, and from both the undergraduate and graduate programmes (regardless of their level of study)
For international students, courses are generally offered either in the form of individual tutorials/consultations or lectures with the other students. Individual lectures/consultations are held in English (or another agreed foreign language) where students work one-to-one with the course lecturers. If enough international students have enrolled for a particular course, then an ordinary course in English with lectures for all the students will be activated.
The minimum level of language proficiency for all courses at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is B2 CEFR, unless specified differently.
Please note that some of the Departments (for instance the Department of English language and Literature, the Department of German language and Literature, the Department of Italian language and literature etc.) may have
Before students arrive at the faculty, their course selection will be reviewed and if needs be, changes to the Learning Agreement will be made (i.e. if the selected course(s) is/are not available, a different semester has been chosen etc.). This is in order for students to be able to start their studies without delay when they arrive at the faculty.

Incoming Erasmus+ students are excused from lectures during the first week of the semester to do all the administrative work to register and find out about course schedules.
Depending on what courses they have chosen, students must obtain their COURSE SCHEDULES from the Departmental Erasmus+ coordinators.
Teaching and Marking System
On most study programmes, students can expect to have a mixture of lectures, independent coursework, and seminars.
Final assessments for most programmes take place at the end of the semester by written and/or oral examinations for each of the courses attended. Usually, the final assessment is based on a student’s performance throughout the semester.
The marking system in Croatia gives students a final mark that ranges between 1 and 5. The lowest mark is 1 and 5 is the highest mark. In addition to the Croatian marking system, students also receive a final mark compatible with the ECTS marking system (A to F).
Marking system
The Croatian grading system consists of five grades with numerical equivalents:
- Excellent (Izvrstan): 5 (highest grade)
- Very good (Vrlo dobar): 4
- Good (Dobar): 3
- Sufficient (Dovoljan): 2 (minimum pass grade)
- Fail (Nedovoljan): 1 (requires student to retake the exam/resubmit work)
ECTS Grade | Croatian grade | Percentage | Definition |
---|---|---|---|
A | 5 | 90-100 % | Excellent |
B | 4 | 80-89 % | Very good |
C | 3 | 70-79 % | Good |
D | 2 | 60-69 % | Sufficient |
E | 1 | 0-59 % | Fail |
NOTE: Higher education institutions in Croatia award ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System). One ECTS credit is equivalent to approx. 30 student working hours. Credits are awarded when a course has been completed and students have successfully carried out the required work for that course. 60 ECTS credits represent the workload of one year of study and 30 ECTS credits represent workload of one semester.
Changes to the learning agreement
In certain situations, students may want/need to change courses and thus change their original Learning Agreements. Before making any changes to the Learning Agreement, students must first consult with the appropriate Course Organiser(s) or the Departmental Erasmus+ Coordinator (in the Department that holds that course) about availability. Once this has been approved, students can make changes to the Learning Agreement. Changes to the Learning Agreement must also be approved both by responsible persons at the student’s home University/Faculty, as well as at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Changes to the Learning Agreement can only be made within the first 30 days after a student’s arrival! Changes after this will not be accepted and/or approved.
Attendance of courses – student duties and obligations
Students are required to fulfil all course obligations (lecture attendance, exam registrations, etc.) as defined by the Course Organiser(s). In the case of any uncertainty about obligations/procedures, students should consult with their Course Organiser(s).
Timetables (course schedules)
Timetables (course schedules) for the selected courses should be obtained by the students, which they can do by directly contacting the Departmental Erasmus+ coordinators or Course Organiser(s) directly.

Exams
Students are required to take exams (oral and written). Students’ work should conform to the standards of academic honesty. Academically inappropriate behaviour includes incorporating other people’s ideas or information in their essays without acknowledging the source, having their coursework done by somebody else, or doing somebody else’s coursework. These are considered very serious academic offences, if there is any proof that a student has done this, they will be referred to the faculty disciplinary board.
If it is discovered that a student has cheated in an exam and/or any other assignment, the Course Organiser(s) will write an official report and start the disciplinary process. Cheating in exams is strictly forbidden and will have consequences on student mobility! The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences uses “TURNITIN” software to check plagiarism.
Language proficiency
To be able to fulfil all their study obligations during their mobility, students are required to have language proficiency in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (CEFR), which is also determined by the bilateral agreement. If needed, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences may require additional proof of a student’s language competencies.
End of mobility and departure from FHSS
At the end of their mobility, students may need to collect certain documents to prove they have completed their mobility (Learning Agreement, Changes to LA, Certificate of arrival/departure etc.).
A Transcript of Records (TOR) will be issued to each student after they have successfully passed their exams by the Student Office and sent in the form of a scanned copy via email. The original document will be sent by regular post to the student’s home address. Students can also pick up the TOR in person at the Student Office.
When planning their departure from the FHSS, students must allow sufficient time for any documents or certificates to be issued!
