Nenad Miščević (1950-2024), our colleague, friend, teacher, and mentor, has passed away.
Although he taught at our Department as an external collaborator, Nenad was one of the founders of the Rijeka Philosophical Circle, whose activities were fundamental to the establishment of our entire Department. As Boran Berčić wrote in the article about the development of philosophy in Rijeka, Nenad was the ‘central figure,’ the ‘main engine of the group, truly the spiritus movens.’
In addition to being one of our most influential and cited analytic philosophers in Croatia, Nenad was a columnist for several publications, editor of professional articles and books, and a public intellectual.
From the late 1970s to the first half of the 1990s, he worked as a professor of philosophy at the University of Zadar. After that, he was employed at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Maribor, where he worked as a tenured professor of philosophy until his sudden departure. Additionally, since the establishment of the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka and the Department of Philosophy at the Central European University in Budapest, he has been involved as an external collaborator in teaching, curriculum development, and organizing professional events.
Nenad was a versatile philosopher who made a significant contribution to the fields of philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy. His bibliography (up to 2012) and autobiographical notes can be found in the book “Nenad Miščević: All Faces of Philosophy,” edited by Petar Bojanić (Belgrade) and Snježana Prijić-Samaržija (Rijeka) on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The book is available at this link. Furthermore, another two publications have been released in which distinguished colleagues discuss Nenad’s philosophical views. In 2014, a special issue of the European Journal of Analytic Philosophy was published, discussing various aspects of Nenad’s views, including his comments on those articles. Subsequently, in 2017, Nenad’s colleagues from Maribor, Bojan Borstner and Smiljana Gartner, edited a book titled “Thought Experiments between Nature and Society: A Festschrift for Nenad Miščević,” discussing Nenad’s contributions in the domain of thought experiments.
In his interactions with colleagues and students, he was always approachable, smiling, willing to help with any topic and philosophical problem, full of advice and passion for the work he pursued. No conversation with Nenad passed without discussing philosophy, but also his beloved Vera, Heda, and, more recently, Mauro. We especially want to express our condolences to them at this difficult time.
With this, we bid farewell to our dear Nenad, confident that his philosophical legacy will continue to inspire future generations of philosophers in Croatia, forever our true spiritus movens.
